Seleni's 16-hour, in-person CE training takes place in a small, interactive classroom setting and provides expert instruction and supervision in effective diagnosis and treatment of perinatal distress and grief from miscarriage, stillbirth, and child loss.

Seleni also has the ability to visit New York City-based organizations for potential off-site trainings. If interested, please contact [email protected]

Our recently expanded curriculum utilizes the most current theoretical and research findings in lectures, case studies, and role-play techniques, we cover the critical steps to treating these common conditions. Special coverage is given to factors that may influence how patients experience PMADs, grief and loss. These include considerations for ART/Third Party Reproduction, minority and low-income patients, LGBTQ+ patients, fathers, immigrants, and young parents.

Our clinical practice is fundamental to the development our trainings. Our therapeutic approach is based on each psychotherapist’s individual training and strengths to deliver clinical applications related to successful outcomes and it integrates different disciplines, techniques and methodologies in a collaborative way.

The training also includes activities to help clinicians become more aware of their personal thoughts, feelings, and attitudes, which can make treatment more effective, bolster confidence, and prevent burnout.

This training is appropriate for psychologists, psychiatrists, psychoanalysts, social workers, nurses, mental health counselors, physicians, graduate students, marriage and family therapists, pastoral counselors, doulas and midwives.

Seleni’s 2-day MMHI Training is approved by Postpartum Support International (PSI) as an alternate pre-requisite training in the 3-step Certification in Perinatal Mental Health.

All participants will receive:

Why the Seleni Institute Trains Mental Health Providers in Maternal Mental Health

Perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs) are among the most common pregnancy complications. They affect as many as 1 in 5 women – more than twice the number of women who develop gestational diabetes. Also, 1 in 4 pregnancies end in miscarriage, and 1 in 160 babies are stillborn. As a mental health professional, it's very likely you'll treat clients who face one or more of these mental health challenges during their reproductive years and who need specialized treatment to cope and move forward successfully.

Most graduate programs do not offer training on how to treat these common disorders, or provide in-depth exploration of other topics (such as infertility and miscarriage) that deeply impact the emotional well-being of even more women and families. To address this need, we created our Maternal Mental Health Intensive in 2014, which equips clinicians and counselors with critical, evidence-based tools to fully support clients through one of the most challenging times of their lives.

Seleni is one of only a few organizations in the United States offering specialized training in treating PMADs, and it's the only one that includes in-depth instruction on treating perinatal loss.

"Leading the training is deeply rewarding personally and professionally," says Christiane Manzella, senior psychologist at the Seleni Institute. "I'm given the opportunity to make a real difference by guiding and supporting clinicians as they learn effective ways to help their clients and provide treatment that can reduce suffering and enhance well-being for women, men, and families."

  • Differentiate normative experiences such as the “baby blues” from the wide range of perinatal distress that encompass PMADs.

  • Implement interventions based on best practices of clinical treatment of PMADs and grief.

  • Evaluate the need for additional interventions, including psychiatric consultation and collaboration as well as psychopharmacological interventions.

  • Diagnose and implement effective interventions and patient care management strategies for normative and complicated grief related to miscarriage, stillbirth, neonatal loss, and the death of a child.

  • Help clients make decisions about whether and how to move forward with building a family.

  • Identify risk factors for perinatal mood and anxiety disorders and suicide.

  • Implement tools to prevent clinician burnout and enhance self-care and connection to meaning in your own life.
